This "colonial" song was composed in 1913, just before the First World War.
The melody was composed by Albert Valsien while the lyrics were written by Lucien Boyer. The singer Mayol recorded it in 1915 and sang it during his tours at the front, before Senegalese soldiers.
"Bou-dou-ba-da-bouh", is the touching story of a brave Senegalese tailor, a "Turco", who came to Paris with his unit to take part in the July 14 parade inspection. This tailor was a musician belonging to the regiment party, that is, the music of front-line soldiers, in those days. On one outing in Paris, he met a young lady, who was employed as a little "errand girl", with whom he had a fleeting love affair of one week, given that he had to return immediately to the front in the Sahara.
Bou-dou-ba-da-bouh died as a hero, while incessantly thinking of his beloved one, to whom he sent his honour cross through a Legion buddy.
NB : Of Claude Le Gouaille: The term "Turco" was normally reserved for Algerian infantry men only, since Algeria was a Turkish province, before the arrival of the French. When the lyric writer Lucien Boyer used this term for a Senegalese infantry man it was by extension. Another precision: Timbuktu is found in Mali, former French Sudan, and not in Senegal. Poet’s freedom !
