The Air Gendarmerie is a specialized military detachment with a strength of about 1,000 soldiers, drawn from the Regional Gendarmerie (gendarmerie départementale), the Mobile Gendarmerie (gendarmerie mobile), and the Republican Guard (garde républicaine).
It is found at air military bases in Metropolitan France, French overseas territories, and also in Senegal and Djibouti. Its headquarters is based in Paris. The Air Gendarmerie comprises 2 units, 5 companies and over 40 brigades, including several motorcycle brigades.
This specialized detachment is responsible for all monitoring, surveillance, checking and intelligence activities related to military bases. At these bases, it plays the role of a military police force, performs administrative and judicial functions, and participates in the protection of facilities and equipment.
