The Department of Equipment
Background
The equipment service, which
from 1976 came to be known as the department of equipment,
is the body, which within the army and the air force, is
in charge of managing all equipment, vehicles, arms and munitions
allotted to various units and ensuring that they are all
in good working condition.
In this capacity, the department of equipment has accompanied
and served all components of French forces engaged in various
conflicts – the First World War, the Second World War,
the Indochina War and the Algerian War amongst others.

Today, the department of equipment, using modern means
such as hoisting and handling engines, logistics transporters
and buggies, breakdown repair trucks and heavy equipment
transporters, ambulances, computerized systems, shelters
and other equipment, provides direct support to operational
units nationwide as well as within the framework of overseas
operations (OPEX) where French troops have been called to
intervene, be it within a joint or a multinational context.

Activities of the department of equipment include technical
assistance and repair of equipment and vehicles as well as
the supply of spare parts.
It should be noted that the department of equipment is
made up of several parachutists companies and a number of
Army Light Aviation (ALAT) support companies based in the
south west of France .
The 1 st equipment regiment is based in Couvron in the
north of Picardy , while the support base of other regiments
are located in different regions nationwide.
