Armored - cavalry songs
La Cavalerie d'Afrique
When the viceroy of Egypt, khedive Ishmael, ordered for this work from Giuseppe Verdi, it was for the inauguration of the Cairo Opera and the Suez Canal, in 1871.
He could not imagine that the love wrangles of the Ethiopian slave Aïda with the young captain of the Radames Guard would someday inspire a song in honour of the Colonial cavalry regiments.
Trumpets have always had a prodigious psychological effect on soldiers, and were considered as the soul of the regiments during their heroic cavalry charges, or even, when they retired to their camps and bivouacs, in the evening, after a long day of hostilities.
During the Second World War and the Italian Campaign, goaded all along by this song and tune, the African regiments distinguished themselves at several fronts, notably during the fierce battles of Garigliano and Monte Cassino. Later on, during the Indochina and Algerian wars, this song and tune were often sung or hummed by French soldiers of all arms.
The 1 mn 20 sec high quality audio piece available on this site was sung by the Schola Cantorum of Wellin.
