The music of El Condor Pasa was composed by a Peruvian composer Daniel Alomía Robles, while the original lyrics were written by Julio de La Paz in 1913. This work was originally a zarzuela, a sort of musical drama, which was performed in public for the first time in 1933.
This Peruvian song, in which the singer forms a wonderful duet with a Panpipe, became very famous worldwide. It was sung in Paris in the early 1960s, by the Los Incas group. Its success did not flag a moment. The following years, other singers also sang it though with different lyrics. In 1966, it was Marie Laforêt, and later in 1970, Simon and Garfunkel, followed by a host of other performers.
Since 2004, El Condor Pasa has considered as a Peruvian cultural heritage song.
