Jeux interdits was originally not a song, but a 1952 French film directed by René Clément. It was written by Pierre Bost and Jean Aurenche, based on a novel by François Boyer "Jeux interdits ".
The setting of the film is during the 1940 French exodus. A civilian convoy having been attacked by the German aviation, Paulette, a five-year old girl, lost here parents. Devastated, she, carried the carcass of her dead pet dog, and lost her way in the surrounding forest. Michel, a ten-year old boy found her in the woods and took her to the farm of his parents, who, though hesitant, accept to accommodate her.
The little girl after burying her pet dog, decided with Michel, to start creating a "Christian graveyard" for all the dead animals they found on and around the farm. For this purpose, they started stealing all the crucifixes they could find, be it on hearses, in churches or from graveyards...
The main actors of the film Jeux interdits are Brigitte Fossey, Georges Poujouly, Lucien Hubert and Laurence Badie. Uploaded here for your listening pleasure is a version performed by Patrick Fiori, and another one, exquisitely played on the guitar.
